Details

A dyed single-ply jute rope from Ogawa, the long-established Japanese rope maker. Like the rest of our Ogawa line it is light and soft in the hand with a consistent twist, treated to a ready-to-use finish (singed, oiled and softened) and cut to 7.5 metre lengths finished with overhand knots.

Ogawa ropes are dyed after the rope has been produced, which means some dye doesn't reach the core of the ropes and the ropes might feel slightly stretchy in the beginning. Once the ropes settle with use they look and feel wonderful.

We order this rope in batches from the supplier, so it's not always in stock and when it is it sells out quickly.

A note on JBO: Ogawa jute rope has a light smell due to the use of jute batching oil during production. This smell fades over time, particularly if the rope is allowed to air. If you'd prefer a rope with less JBO, our own Anatomie jute line has a much lower smell.

Care & storage

Surface fuzz is normal

New jute develops a layer of fine fuzz. Some people singe this off; you can also brush it off with a coir brush, or just allow it to shed naturally with use. It's part of the breaking-in phase every jute rope goes through and not a defect.

Keep it dry

Jute is a natural fibre and doesn't love being damp. If you can, we recommend airing your ropes out after use by hanging them. If your ropes do get wet you'll need to hang them under tension.

Re-oil when it dries out

Over time and use, jute loses some of the oils and will start to feel stiff and brittle. Re-treat the ropes with a jute-suitable oil (camellia/tsubaki oil is standard, jojoba oil is also very popular). How often you'll need to treat your ropes depends on how often you use it, whether it's used on skin or clothing and also the climate.

FAQs

Which length do I actually need?

Most people will want to purchase the 7.5 m length for shibari. We make longer lengths available to for those who prefer to cut ropes to a specific length, or sometimes because Naka-style practitioners like a single long rope in their kit.

How many ropes do I need?

A dangerous question to ask the shop that sells you the rope — so we'll be straight: fewer than you might think if you're just getting started. You can get a single rope if you want to practice the basic knots and frictions, and then add to this gradually as your skills improve.

Once you are ready to move beyond the absolute basics, you'll want between 2 to 4 ropes so that you can practice harnesses and have a bit more fun with tying in general.

A complete rope set would typically be around 12 ropes.

Purple jute rope smells very toxic from dye

Hey guys,
The purple jute rope is incredibly toxic. It smells very strongly of chemicals, and burns my eyes. There's no way I'd put it on skin. I spent hours washing it with mild soap, and rinsing, yet it is still toxic. It's useless in this condition.
Best,
Mike

Still smelling of JBO

Unfortunately, I am pretty unhappy with the Ogawa red jute rope as it still smells unpleasently of JBO even after almost two weeks on the balcony in the sun. Currently I only see one way out, i.e. to wash and retreat them myself again. Much too expensive for that.

Love the red ogawa

I’ve bought Ogawa rope a couple of times now from Anatomie and would rate both the rope and the shop very highly. So much so I have recommended the shop to other lovers of Shibari.
Great rope and the aesthetics are amazing. My rope bunny loves the smooth feeling from the ogawa jute right out of the box and it lasts really well.
Look forward to buying more rope in the near future. Anatomie is the only place to go.

Thank you so much for the kind review! We're glad you love the ropes (and our store too of course).

Wonderful Rope!

The lay and feel of this rope is fantastic. The deep colour is even and consistent throughout the length and it feels wonderful. Having a simple overhand knot was easy to change to the whipped and wall knotted ends I prefer. I’ll definitely be buying more when I need it!

Not worth it

Very strong chemical smell. Diminished after keeping them in the oven at 70 degrees with fresh wax/oil mixture on them. The rope is pretty nice but it was dyed as a roll and not dried under tension by the look of it and it's very loose. It will probably get tighter with use but all in all this is not something I would buy again.

The colour of royalty.

My partner and I love working with jute rope from Anatomie and I love purple. So it was a no brainer when this batch came out. A rich colour, it is a pleasure to use and it squeaks a treat in a hogtie giving some wonderful ASMR too. A good set to add to our collection.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First set of ropes I ever bought and they’re the best treat I could give myself. Flexible, a little rough, strong yet elegant. The coloring is beautiful and deep. I will definitely return to Anatomie if I ever want to expand my practice. 🧶❣️

Sensation is great

I love the softness and silkiness of the rope and I can still feel the "rawness" which is great for me. I prefer this to other materials role which are too soft so you have to press it harder to feel it. It is smooth and pliable. And the colour is beautiful. I will definitely order again.

little disappointed

These ropes are beautiful, but still VERY rough and seem almost completely untreated. The ends are tied off and fraying a little, exposing the undyed inside of the rope which really loses the aesthetic of a more professional looking rope that I was looking for. I would still recommend them to anyone looking for jute, just be prepared to retreat them when you receive them. Perhaps buy some rope goo.

Your ropes are definitely treated, but even treated ropes can feel rough in the beginning. They should break-in within a few uses. Dyed ropes do tend to require a little more maintenance (particular re-oiling) in the beginning.

All the ropes we sell are finished with simple 'stopper knots', which are just overhand knots. We recommend re-tying this knot using the frayed ends once the ropes settle (after a few weeks or months).
